Carl Hayano -- "Holy Mackerel" (1978-1979) -- Signed Original Oil and Airbrush Painting

An original oil and airbrush painting by Carl Hayano, titled "Holy Mackerel" and dated 1978-79 in the artist's hand. The composition features Hayano's signature dense grid of rounded, luminous forms in deep gold and warm earth tones, punctuated at the upper register by vivid orange and red bursts of color. A sinuous red and black ribbon-like form moves through the middle of the composition, creating a sense of life and motion against the hypnotic pattern beneath.

The painting is signed with the artist's red chop mark on the front, and inscribed on the verso in Hayano's own handwriting with his name, his DeKalb address, phone number, the date 78-79, and the title. This constitutes direct artist provenance, as documented.

The title places this work in Hayano's food-themed series alongside "Maguro," "Sweet and Sour Pork," "Halley's Sushi," and "Sushi Series No. 2" -- a body of work that weaves Japanese and Chinese culinary references through rigorous geometric abstraction with characteristic dry wit.

The canvas went on tour in 1988 and remained in storage from that point until arriving at Industrial Treasures -- unwrapped for the first time in over 35 years.

Condition: Very good. Minor foxing consistent with age and storage history, most visible in the canvas margins. The painted surfaces are unaffected and the work presents beautifully.
