Carl Hayano -- "Maguro" (1977) -- Original Oil and Airbrush Painting

A large-scale original oil and airbrush painting by Carl Hayano, completed in 1977 and titled "Maguro" -- the Japanese word for bluefin tuna. The title places this work squarely within Hayano's food-themed series, which includes "Holy Mackerel," "Halley's Sushi," and "Sushi Series No. 2," and reflects his characteristic dry wit and Japanese cultural references woven throughout his career.

The composition features undulating horizontal bands rendered in rich earth tones, bronze, and gold, set against a cream-colored grid that remains visible beneath the paint layers. Between the bands, cloud-like forms in silver and pale blue create a sense of depth and open space. The work has a strongly atmospheric quality, reading at once as landscape and abstraction -- vast, layered, and quietly commanding.

The painting is signed "Hayano '77" in the artist's hand at the lower right, accompanied by his traditional red chop mark. The title "Maguro" is inscribed in pencil at the lower left.

The canvas went on tour in 1988 and remained in storage from that point until arriving at Industrial Treasures -- unwrapped for the first time in over 35 years.

Condition: Very good. Minor foxing consistent with age and storage history, most visible in the canvas margins. The painted surfaces are unaffected and the work presents beautifully.
