Description

An original oil and airbrush painting by Carl Hayano, titled "Sweet and Sour Pork" and dated 1979. The composition shares the same dense, grid-like structure of rounded forms as its companion piece "Holy Mackerel," but rendered here in cooler tones -- deep grays, golds, and luminous lavender and purple, with a silver-blue serpentine line cutting through the lower half of the composition. Where "Holy Mackerel" runs warm, this one runs cool. Together they form a visual conversation across the same visual language.

The title reflects Hayano's characteristic dry wit, drawing from Chinese culinary tradition in the same spirit as other works in his food-themed series, including "Maguro," "Halley's Sushi," and "Sushi Series No. 2."
The painting is signed "Hayano '79" in the artist's hand, accompanied by his traditional red chop mark, and titled in pencil at the lower left.

The canvas went on tour in 1988 and remained in storage from that point until arriving at Industrial Treasures -- unwrapped for the first time in over 35 years.

Approximate dimensions: 41" x 39.5" framed.
Medium: Oil and airbrush on canvas.
Condition: Very good. Minor foxing consistent with age and storage history, most visible in the canvas margins. The painted surfaces are unaffected and the work presents beautifully.
